Apple iPhone 2.0 Release for Christmas 2007

While still one of the most popular mobile devices on the market right now, the Apple iPhone is already old news. The new iPod Touch is everything the iPhone is except it has more capacity and fewer annoyances. As a result, it makes perfect sense for Apple Inc. to drop the price on the iPhone. Even with the price drop though, the iPhone has lost a lot of it’s momentum and it seems drastic measures are in order. Enter the second generation iPhone (iPhone 2.0)!
The holiday season is fast approaching and like clockwork, Apple is busy pushing new products out to consumers such as the iPod Touch, the new iPod Nano, sleeker iMacs, upgraded MacBook Pro’s and even some new software packages. There is no doubt that Apple has had one of it’s best years to date but even with all these new releases it seems like something is missing.
So what does Steve Jobs have up his sleeve to close out a stellar 2007? Only time will tell but it’s certainly seems feasible that the iPhone 2.0 could easily be that smoking gun product that everyone is waiting for.
Jobs and his team of engineers know what people want in the second generation iPhone and they’ve already delivered some of those features in the iPod Touch. It seems fair to predict that they could push the iPhone 2.0 to market just in time for Christmas 2007.
This is of course a prediction, or perhaps wishful thinking but is it really too much to ask? Even without and iPhone 2.0 it will be interesting to see how Apple tops a stellar 2007 performance in 2008.
I think that a new release for Christmas would be a great finish to this year, however I am kind of concerned about Apple’s lack of knowledge in the cell phone industry. I do not think that Apple did its homework on the American cell phone mentality. First of there has to be a price limitation and a certain expectation of the customer getting their money and use out of a phone.
In order for apple to break the cell phone industry they will have lower prices even furuther on lower Iphone grade such as 1.0 and then keep prices within rational prices for any future models such as 2.0 - 5.0.
I believe that cell phone customers for the most part are not going to too interested in spending half a grand thinking that they got the “Jesus Phone”. Just to find out that Apple lowered on that same phone and are going to be coming out with 2.0 and perhaps 3.0 or even 4.0 with the next year. It is very unlikey that people are going to put up with that in a cell phone. People usually stick with their cell phones for 1-2 years before considering a new verison.
Also . . .The price for the Iphone 1.0 at 399.99 would have been great if it were the only phone that they were not coming out with. I see apple pricing people out of the Iphone market and frustrating customers wanting an Iphone with new releases and inflated prices. I just do not see cell phone customers paying much more than 500.00 for any type of cell phone no matter what it is like. After $500.00-$600.00 you are better off buying a laptop with a wirless connection plan and having a cell phone on the side. Apple should keep this in mind that the Iphone are not like ipods where you can own and use multiple ipods. Most people only have and need one moblie phone.
I couldn’t agree more Robert. It’s the Playstation 3 mentality all over again. Sony was banking on the fact that the Playstation 2 was the best selling console of all time and that people would like getting a high definition video player, a game console and media center software all in one. So they jacked the price way up and completely lost focus on what people really want ….GREAT GAMES!
Apple is starting to recover from their mistakes in the debut release of the iPhone though. They’ve cut prices and canceled their 4GB model which is just way too small a capacity for a multimedia / cell phone device these days. And last but probably most important of all, they’ve announce that an iPhone Software Development Kit will be released in February 2008. For me, this is a critical step. The iPhone SDK will give third party developers what they need to create both fun and useful applications for the next generation iPhone 2.0.
I think 2008 will be a very productive year for Apple Inc. In 2007 they’ve shown that they are very capable of penetrating new markets beyond the realm of personal computing. I hope they will take a step back in 2008 to figure out what they need to do in order to really refine their products and make them even more innovative and useful than they already are.
Few nice comments here. But we shouldn’t forget the fact that Apple did broke alot of customers on iphone release. There would be lots of cons about the cellphone itself but iPhone is certainly an innovative cellphone.
The most important thing for me on the new iphone is that it drastically updates its camera:
1.Put in a 3.2 or even 5 MP camera
2.Video capability and flash
3.16 GB overall memory
it does have a 5mega pixel and the touch screen pen. Four speakers screen is a bit smaller then iPhone 1 but for the most part looks the same battery comes out sd chips for memory. I got one if you like I can a pic
I could care less about an upgrade to the camera. Video would be nice too, but not a big deal for me. It’s the small things like it’s lack of MMS, mass SMS, message forwarding, and mass delete features that bother me about it. How difficult would it have been to add some radio select buttons or check boxes next to multiple names I want to send a text too. Or easily allow me to tap a section of a text conversation and forward that to a contact (or 50). Even the lack of larger memory sized doesn’t bother me. I mean I am DJ and listen to tons of music. I have over 100 pics and over 500 songs on my 8g iPhone. That’s more than enough for me.
I’m hoping that the (impending) Feb update will add some of those features or at the least have the ability to add some of these feature with the release of the developers kit.
Also wanted to say that while yes Apple is new in the mobile phone industry, that’s a poor excuse for not knowing how mobile phone users use their mobile devices. The partnered with AT&T and had them by there side through the majority of the development. AT&T dropped the ball in getting the small, but important features out. I’m sure the next gen iPhone will be much better in that respect.
Has the offical release date of iphone 2.0 been announced yet?
Unfortunately no, the iphone 2.0 has not yet been officially announced. New rumors are circulating on the web that they will be announcing the official release date in March 2008 at an electronics show.
